US VP Vance Criticizes Israeli West Bank Annexation Plans

US Vice President JD Vance has voiced strong disapproval of the Israeli Knesset's vote on a bill aimed at extending Israeli sovereignty to parts of the West Bank. Vance described the move as "stupid and insulting," emphasizing that it starkly contradicts pledges made by former US President Donald Trump.

US Commitment to Trump's Policies

During his recent visit to Israel, Vance affirmed that "the West Bank will not be annexed by Israel. The policy of the Trump administration was and remains not to allow Israel to annex the West Bank." He added, "If someone wants to hold a symbolic vote, that's their business, but we are clearly not happy about it."

Sharp Criticism of the Bill

Vance characterized the bill as "an extremely stupid political stunt," expressing personal offense. This follows an initial vote in the Knesset on a bill aiming to annex all Israeli settlements in the West Bank. Analysts suggest the vote was largely driven by internal political conflicts within Israel, rather than a genuine desire to implement this controversial measure.

Israeli Reactions

For its part, the office of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu described the vote as "a deliberate political provocation by the opposition during the US Vice President's visit to Israel, aimed at stirring up discord."

Impact on Peace Efforts

The vote comes at a sensitive time, as the Trump administration seeks to reach a ceasefire agreement in Gaza, an agreement that has garnered widespread support from Arab governments, partly due to Trump's commitment to preventing Israel from annexing the West Bank.

Future Plans for Gaza

Furthermore, Vance revealed a plan proposed by Jared Kushner to divide Gaza into two sections, with reconstruction funds directed only to Israeli-controlled areas, while Hamas-controlled areas would remain stagnant. He mentioned the possibility of relocating tens of thousands of Gazan residents to the southern part of the Strip, where a new city could be built to accommodate 500,000 people.

Political Challenges for Netanyahu

Trump's shift in stance on annexation presents a significant political challenge for Netanyahu, especially with Israeli elections approaching. Analysts believe that political parties may use issues like "annexation" to bolster their positions before the elections.
