In a recent interview with CBS's '60 Minutes,' former President Donald Trump addressed a wide array of geopolitical and domestic political issues. Discussions included potential tensions with Venezuela, the future of the US nuclear arsenal, the ongoing immigration crisis, and the continuing federal government shutdown.
Despite a significant US naval deployment in the Caribbean, Trump downplayed the likelihood of direct warfare between the United States and Venezuela. However, he suggested that President Nicolás Maduro's tenure might be nearing its end. When questioned about a potential military intervention, Trump responded, "I doubt it, it shouldn't happen. But they have been very unfriendly to us."
Trump went on to assert that the United States has "secret plans" for Venezuela, refusing to rule out any military action. This statement has drawn criticism from regional leaders like Colombian President Gustavo Petro, who has accused the US of using drug interdiction as a pretext for intervention in Latin American affairs.
Trump also raised the prospect of the United States resuming nuclear weapons testing to align with countries like Russia. He asserted that the US should be doing nuclear testing "like other countries." However, US Energy Secretary Chris Wright was quick to downplay these remarks, stating that there are no current plans for nuclear detonations.
Focusing on the ongoing immigration crisis, Trump asserted that his government "will not allow" migrants from around the world to enter the United States. He specifically mentioned the "Tren de Aragua" gang, describing it as "the most vicious criminal organization in the world."
Trump placed the blame for the ongoing federal government shutdown on the Democrats, referring to them as "crazy maniacs." He expressed his belief that they will eventually compromise and vote to end the shutdown, but warned that if they don't, "that's their problem."
The interview came after a settlement in a lawsuit between Trump and Paramount, the parent company of CBS. Trump had claimed that Paramount "edited content to favor the Democrats" in an interview with then-Vice President Kamala Harris. Paramount agreed to pay $16 million to settle the case, although the funds will be used for Trump's future presidential library and will not be paid to him directly.
