Texas Residents Reject Incorporation to Control Bitcoin Mining Noise

Residents living in a small area of Hood County, Texas, were unsuccessful in their attempt to form a new municipality in order to regulate the excessive noise emanating from a nearby Bitcoin mining facility. According to a report published by The Texas Tribune, only 38% of the 138 voters supported the proposal to create "Mitchell Bend," a proposed municipality encompassing a two-square-mile community of approximately 600 individuals.

For nearly three years, local residents have voiced concerns regarding the disruption caused by MARA's 60,000 Bitcoin miners. The loud noise generated by these machines, essential for securing Bitcoin's $2 trillion network, has reportedly led to sleepless nights, headaches, and hearing problems for residents, with some even relocating. MARA has taken steps to mitigate the noise, including extending a 24-foot wall and converting two-thirds of its cooling fans to a liquid cooling system.

Despite these efforts, residents maintain that the noise remains a significant issue, prompting the consideration of incorporating Mitchell Bend. This new municipality would represent a small fraction of the nearly 70,000 residents residing in Hood County.

MARA's Initial Attempt to Block the Vote

MARA initially filed a lawsuit in late October in an attempt to prevent the vote, arguing that the incorporation of Mitchell Bend would negatively impact its operations and potentially result in burdensome taxation. Although the request was denied, a MARA spokesperson conveyed satisfaction with the outcome, stating, "We’re pleased that Hood County voters saw through the sham incorporation effort and rejected it at the ballot box."

Locals Vow to Continue the Fight for Peace

Danny Lakey, a Hood County resident, expressed disappointment but affirmed the residents' commitment to pursuing alternative solutions. "Although we took a loss here, we are going to move forward and we will continue to do what we can to not let industry take over Hood County."

Residents had previously taken legal action against MARA and its site manager, David Fischer, regarding noise violations; however, these actions were unsuccessful. In Arkansas, the Vilonia planning commission unanimously rejected a proposal to establish a crypto mining facility, following strong opposition from residents in April.
