Article Summary

  • Analysis of Bitcoin's ownership transition from early adopters to institutions.
  • Study of Ethereum's ownership shifts, focusing on the role of ETFs and DeFi.
  • Examination of Solana's position in the context of ownership transitions, with a focus on new institutional investors.
  • Predictions about the future of cryptocurrency prices based on current ownership shifts.

Bitcoin Ownership Shifts

Despite the approval of BTC ETFs and increased institutional adoption, Bitcoin's price remains stagnant with limited liquidity. Early Bitcoin investors are gradually realizing profits, while new investors are planning to buy on dips.

Data indicates that long-term Bitcoin holders are selling significant amounts of BTC. For example, long-term BTC holders sold 405,000 BTC within 30 days, representing 1.9% of the total circulating supply.

Example: Owen Gunden

Owen Gunden is considered one of the early Bitcoin whales. Reports indicate that he has begun transferring large amounts of BTC to the Kraken exchange, suggesting that he is preparing to sell a significant portion of his holdings, estimated to be worth over $1 billion.

Ethereum Ownership Shifts

Ethereum (ETH) is undergoing a similar ownership transition, albeit with more complexity. Data shows that approximately 11% of all ETH is now held by ETFs and Dedicated Active Traders (DATs). However, the transition in ETH appears to be moving from retail investors to institutional whales.

Data suggests that large accounts holding over 100,000 ETH are experiencing a rapid increase in their average cost basis, indicating that new buyers are entering the market at higher prices, while smaller holders are selling off.

Solana Ownership Shifts

Solana (SOL) is also transitioning into a similar institutional phase. Spot SOL ETFs have begun to emerge, with positive inflows. Dedicated Active Traders (DATs) currently hold 2.9% of the total circulating SOL, valued at $2.5 billion.

While Solana's on-chain data is messy, it is still concentrated in early insider and venture capital wallets. However, these tokens are slowly moving through ETFs and treasuries into new institutional buyers.

Future Predictions

These ownership shifts suggest that we may see an increase in the prices of Bitcoin, Ethereum, and Solana. The Bitcoin transition may end first, followed by Ethereum, while the Solana transition may take longer.

In previous cycles, a rise in Bitcoin's price was followed by a rise in Ethereum's price, and then wealth gradually spread to lower market capitalization altcoins. However, the situation may be different this time, as altcoins are focusing on utility, yields, and speculation rather than competing with Bitcoin as a currency.
